[EVIL LURKS] is an original horror film currently in the final stages of script development (2024). [ Æ ] ‘Schism’
[SCHISM] is an upcoming film from NUMINOUS and an expansion of the APEX universe. “We set an intention with the first film [ APEX ], we began building a landscape and mythology around science fiction concepts that intrigued and inspired us. Schism is the next film in the series and advances some of those questions in a very exciting way”. STB
‘Schism’ is a cosmic horror, very much in the tradition of ‘Lovecraftian’ stories. The story explores consciousness, evolution and the conception of god/s in this ambitious project from acclaimed experimental filmmaker S.T Birchall. This project will be the first collaboration between NUMINOUS & ELEMENTAL ARTS and will feature a number of guest artists working on design and conception of the films original elements. [ LUNA ] STOP MOTION ANIMATION
Recently we began development on the first stop motion animation project from Numinous. A huge undertaking and steep learning curve. “Despite most of my childhood and earliest inspiration being defined by the classic animation, puppets and stop motion techniques, I have been afraid of approaching these old techniques, I have always been inspired by the work of Ray Harryhausen and Phil Tippett and until we hit the lockdown I had not considered how these techniques could be utilised in my work, I began to sculpt and developed miniatures during the downtime and feel creatively reconnected and energised”.
Stuart has developed this project from base sketches and concepts, through hand sculpted polymer clay and 3D sculpted and printed elements. The sets have been designed and hand built as miniatures. The animated sequences will feature as part of a hybrid film / music video project.
The project has been fraught with technical issues, delays and set backs due to the pandemic but we are excited to be in the final stages and the project will be completed late 2024.
[ Holding company ] / DEFYING DECAY + ‘MAKING OF’ FEATURE
Completed and due for release summer 2024, [ HOLDING COMPANY ] a new ‘Short Film / Music Video’ hybrid collaboration between NUMINOUS & DEFYING DECAY. This release will include a ‘Making of’ feature. This exciting project is currently in the final edit.
[ TRISKELION ]
[ TRISKELION ] is the latest short film from Stuart T Birchall. A dark abstract exploration of the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme and mind control. Three realities spiral together as a woman sacrifices everything attempting to escape the labyrinth, fighting to become the master of her consciousness.
A twisting triptych of narratives spirals together a contemporary metaphor, exploring the dark night of the soul. The themes of imprisonment by technology, torture, sacrifice we make for our material reality. Self empowerment, rebirth, naked and bloody as a warrior within fights to escape.
The ‘Triskelion’ is a maze-like symbol of three interlocking spirals, the film structure moves in a similar way, connected at the centre through the characters journey, whilst evolving as three narrative layers pull the story into a spiral. Each of the themes drift towards their own end whilst forming a complete visual puzzle at the climax.
APEX 2018 is an award winning short film from director Stuart T Birchall. This critically acclaimed experimental science fiction film. Part of a series of sci-fi films Birchall is producing between 2018/2021.
